The Department of Minerals and Energy's Mine Health and Safety Council has named the Tshikondeni coal mine in South Africa's Limpopo province, operated by diversified metals and mining company Kumba Resources, as the Coal Mines division winner in its annual safety achievement programme.
Commenting on the award, May Hermanus, chairperson of the Mine Health and Safety Council, said, "The evaluators were impressed with the mine?s safety management programme as well as management's commitment towards safety."
Ernst Venter, general manager of Kumba Coal, said: "The Tshikondeni team has managed their considerable underground challenges exceedingly well to ensure that the mine is a safe place to work. This is an example of commitment to safety excellence which is valued at Kumba and is a non-negotiable part of our business performance.
"Tshikondeni's achievement demonstrates a culture of continuous improvement and a commitment within the Group to make our operations the safest in the country."
Kumba?s annual target for lost day injury frequency rate (per 200 000 man hours worked) is 0.35, down from 0.5 in 2004.
As part of the safety achievement programme, the DME calculates the "safety risk? of all South African mines over a three-year period. The safety risk is compared with the previous years' safety risk to establish whether there has been any significant improvement. Mines are categorised in terms of: coal mines; ultra deep gold and platinum mines; shallow to deep gold and platinum mines; and other mines.
