Base metals and industrial minerals
A feasibility study is being undertaken on further expansion of the Chifeng refinery to increase capacity by around 130ktpa. The outcome of this study is expected in 2008. This project could also include consolidating the three phases and mining into one company. Exxaro would review its participation at that time.
AlloyStream
The commercialisation of
AlloyStream™ technology, which allows for the benefi ciation of manganese ore into ferromanganese, is advancing according to plan. Following the positive outcome of a pre-feasibility study for a 20ktpa demonstration furnace in November 2007, it has been decided to proceed with a bankable feasibility study for the project.
Black Mountain
To position Exxaro strategically in the South
African zinc market, the group has the option to acquire 26% in Black Mountain from Anglo American.
The Black Mountain
mine is near the town of Aggeneys in the Northern Cape province
of South Africa, and exploits lead, zinc, copper
and silver by mining ore from various deposits. The mine produces three concentrates with zinc concentrate delivered to Exxaro’s zinc refinery
in Springs, Gauteng, South Africa. Lead
and copper concentrates, from which silver is also extracted, are exported
to various smelters worldwide through Saldanha Bay.
The Gamsberg zinc project is situated next to Black Mountain, a proposed large-scale,
low- to medium-grade open-pit mine expected to produce approximately
300ktpa of zinc – making it the largest single mine and concentrator
in the world.
