Australia Sands

Exxaro has a 100% shareholding in Australia Sands, whose principal asset is its 50% ownership in the Tiwest joint venture with Tronox Inc (www.tiwest.com.au). Tiwest, situated in Western Australia, is a fully integrated mineral sands and titanium pigment producer using modern chloride technology. Tiwest operations include mining and dry separation of titanium minerals and zircon, upgrading ilmenite into synthetic rutile and producing titanium dioxide pigment.

The Tiwest joint venture consists of the Cooljarloo mine 170 km north of Perth, the Chandala mineral separation plant 70 km north of Perth and the Kwinana pigment facility just south of Perth. Tiwest employs approximately 700 people.

Cooljarloo has current capacity to mine 24Mtpa of ore, using a combination of dredging and dry mining. The resultant mineral sands concentrate is transported by road to the dry separation plant at Chandala to provide ilmenite, rutile and zircon for further upgading or sale.

The synthetic rutile plant is also at Chandala where ilmenite is upgraded from 62% titanium dioxide content to synthetic rutile of 93% titanium dioxide content.

The pigment plant at Kwinana uses the synthetic rutile  as feedstock to produce titanium dioxide pigment for sale to customers principally producing paint and plastics.
