KZN
Sands is focused on the exploration, mining and treatment of mineral
sands deposits in
KZN
Sands employs about 700 people and uses hydraulic mining at the Hillendale
mine 20 km south-west of Richards Bay to produce slurry for the mine’s
primary wet plant. Currently, ilmenite, zircon and rutile are produced
from Hillendale. Further processing, including smelting ilmenite to
produce titanium dioxide slag, takes place at the central processing
complex in Empangeni, 20 km west of
KZN Sands produces ilmenite, chlorinatable titanium dioxide slag, slag fines, zircon, rutile, leucoxene and low manganese pig iron.
The KZN Sands smelter has two furnaces with a nameplate capacity of 250ktpa of slag, and infrastructure to accommodate another two. The furnaces were commissioned in 2003. Both furnaces are still in the planned five-year ramp-up phase. Furnace 1 was temporarily shut in the second half of 2006 for maintenance and improvements that were successfully made to Furnace 2.
Although the operation is adversely affected by a strong rand currently, KZN Sands’ primary focus is to reach nameplate capacity on the furnaces and to contain costs.
The current annual nameplate production capacity of KZN Sands is:
| Capacity ktpa |
|
| Titanium dioxide slag | 250 |
| Low manganese pig iron | 145 |
| Zircon | 50 |
| Rutile | 25 |
| Ilmenite | 550 |
