Exxaro managers swap boardroom chairs for cycling saddles to raise R1,5m for charity

This weekend, three Exxaro teams will get into their saddles to participate in the 8th annual Absa Cape Epic mountain bike race and in the process raise around R1,5 million for charity.

The demanding eight-day mountain bike adventure starts on Sunday, 27 March and traverses 707km, including 14 550m of climbing between Tokai and Lourensford in the Western Cape.

So far, the teams have confirmed sponsorships totaling around R1,5 million from Exxaro, Professional Cost Consultants, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deutsche Bank, Rand Merchant Bank, Stefanutti Stocks, JP Morgan and Tubular Holdings. Funds will be donated to various charities, including the Beeld Children’s Fund, Tuks Rag and Wet Nose Animal Rescue Centre.

The Exxaro teams consist of Wim de Klerk (finance director), Dr Willem van Niekerk (executive general manager for corporate services), Adriaan de Beer (investor relations manager), Mellis Walker (financial manager for mineral sands) and Dirk Lourens (wellness instructor at Exxaro’s gymnasium). Pieter Kunz (director at PCC) is also joining the Exxaro team.

The team members - all novice Epic cyclists and in the masters category - started with their training programme in November 2010.
