Introduction 2012

Exxaro MTB Academy is proud to announce its teams to ride the 2012 Absa Cape Epic.

In August 2011, Exxaro was announced as a headline sponsor and official development academy partner to the Absa Cape Epic. The Exxaro MTB Academy was established to introduce mountain biking to historically disadvantaged communities and individuals.. Our mission is to help transform the sport in South Africa by increasing the number of previously disadvantaged riders in events like the Absa Cape Epic and to inspire young people to build a positive future for themselves and their families by providing them with a healthy lifestyle alternative to live out their dreams.

For this year’s race, new talent was sourced and screened in the Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Waterberg regions, targeting many of Exxaro’s business operations. About 100 bicycles were made available for anyone to use in the initial qualifying races held to recruit potential riders. Each region hosted a race for all the qualifying riders, who competed for a place in the training camp. Promising disadvantaged riders were also able to apply for support to the Exxaro Academy Bursary programme, managed with assistance and expertise from the Absa Cape Epic management team. Three development teams were awarded entries through the bursary programme.

Prologue 2012

For the first time ever at the Absa Cape Epic, the Exxaro Development Jersey was awarded. This special category jersey is awarded to the winning South African team, of which both members are historically disadvantaged, provided both are under 26-years old on 31 December of the year in which the race takes place.

Proud and deserving winners, Azukile Simayile and Sipho Madolo from The team riding for the Exxaro MTB Academy were presented with this jersey by Wim de Klerk, Exxaro’s Finance Director at the Prologue prize giving event. These two riders received an entry via the bursary programme Exxaro offered via the Epic website
