Mafube Life Extension

Project Overview

Mafube Coal has, to date, sold only small volumes of briquettes, but remains committed to marketing and selling such products in order to reduce its stockpile of ultrafines and generate additional revenue for the remainder of the mine’s life. Once successful, the addition of these products to Mafube’s output will result in a projected increase in value of R137m.

The Project’s scope includes the construction of a 7km overland conveyor to move the ROM from the Nooitgedacht reserve block to the current washing plant at Springboklaagte. Other typical opencast infrastructure forming part of the scope includes haul roads, access roads, dams, and offices. The scope further includes the relocation of the current tip, primary crusher and Springboklaagte heavy mining vehicle (HMV) workshop to Nooitgedacht.

Upon completion of the project, the plant will produce primarily A-grade, export-quality product at a rate of approximately 3.8m tonnes per annum.

With the investment decision for implementation approved in 2016, construction on the site is already in progress, with a full handover of production expected to be completed by Q2 2018.
