  • CoM Cert Strata Control ( Essential/Minimum )
  • SA National Institute of Rock Engineering ( Recommended/Desirable )
  • Certificate of Fitness ( Essential/Minimum )

The incumbent will inter alia be responsible for the following:

Best Practice and Knowledge Management

• Establish and maintain internal and external specialist networks

• Contribute towards the development of best practices and continuous improvement

  • Drive and optimize continuous improvement projects

Compliance, Governance and Assurance

• Maintain and improve safe operational and ground control standards

• Support governance through adherence to Rock Engineering policy, procedures and standards

• Comply with relevant statutory and legal requirements

• Monitor and report on compliance to Code of Practice (CoP) and associated standards and procedures.

• Conduct timeous investigation of ground control related incidents and ensure that the adequate remedial action is implemented effectively

• Execute and drive ground control related safety programs

• Identify hazardous activities/conditions and implement mitigation  measures

• Conduct assurance reviews and report on compliance to relevant CoP and associated standards and procedures

  • Provide ground control assurance support

Optimisation Support

• Manage and control ground control monitoring equipment and systems

• Communicate critical risk factors with immediate effect to the responsible stakeholders

Process Control

• Adhere to planned ground control monitoring schedules

• Ensure the optimal use of available resources, both people and equipment

• Implementation and execution of ground control monitoring strategy to monitor ground stability and ground support performance to ensure that they conform to design requirements during operational execution

• Conduct regular inspections of working areas to detect, assess and report on abnormal ground conditions and deviation from design

• Maintain ground control related documents as per legal requirement and mine standards.

Safe and Healthy Work Environment

• Maintain and ensure a healthy environment, safe operations and practices, ensuring compliance with all applicable SHE policies and  procedures in line with set standards

• Encourage a culture that focuses on safety in all operations

Specialised Support

• Responsible for ground control monitoring through visual and instrument aided methods

• Responsible for geotechnical data collection, capturing, processing and database management according to relevant standards

• Provide ground control related input during mine planning meetings and production caucuses

• Conduct ground control risk assessments and compliance reviews

• Support development and implement systems/initiatives to drive performance excellence

• Participate in multi-disciplinary project teams as part of optimizing the resource and reserve

• Provide input to geotechnical excavation and ground support design and optimisation

• Implementation and execution of ground deformation monitoring strategy to monitor, assess and report on ground stability

• Monitor quality of ground support installation and assess performance thereof to ensure that it conform to design requirements

• Support the operation management team in executing the business plan and strategy

• Provide on-the-job coaching to workers and supervisors in the workplace

• Provide input to ground control training and conduct awareness coaching

• Conduct routine, ad-hoc or requested inspections to examine, monitor and assess the safety, stability and condition of working area

• Ensure that ground support units meet quality specifications through implementation of a quality control program

• Collect relevant information to assist with the compilation of mandatory Codes of Practice

• Record and report on fall of ground related accidents and incidents and analyse trends

• Provide support with technical evaluations of relevant projects in various developmental stages by applying appropriate evaluation methods & project management principles

• Manage specialist geotechnical contractors (drilling; laboratory; monitoring; support installation; etc.)
