Exxaro's Mining Mega Projects

From initiatives dedicated to securing the supply of quality thermal coal, to upgrading existing sites to be more modern and efficient, Exxaro’s Mega Projects are geared toward ensuring a more productive tomorrow. These investments have several objectives: to grow the coal business, to expand and increase production volumes in a more sustainable way, and more.

Belfast Implementation

A R3.3bn project, and first-of-its-kind digital mine in Mpumalanga under Exxaro’s stewardship. Already producing high-grade thermal coal six months ahead of schedule, the mine is the region’s last high-yield, high value-add coal deposit. The project is strategically aligned to bolster the coal business, sustainability and Exxaro’s position.

Grootegeluk New Rapid Load Out Station (GGNRLOS)

The R1.3bn Grootegeluk Load Out Station (GGNRLOS) upgrade project, currently in phase 1, will replace the old D8 LOS with a new rapid LOS for rail distribution. With faster train handling time, higher load accuracy and an adjusted train loading direction, the new LOS will meet Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) specifications and enable the expansion of the Grootegeluk 6 plant.

Grootegeluk 6 (GG6) Project

The Grootegeluk mine close to Lephalale, Limpopo province, is a critical source of both A-grade, export-quality coal and power station coal that fuels Eskom’s Medupi and Matimba power stations. The site has an estimated LOM of 45 years, producing 17 million tonnes annually. The R4.8bn expansion of GG6 will ensure increased throughput and enhanced processing efficiencies to ramp up export coal production at this important site.

Leeuwpan Lifex Extension

In line with Exxaro’s commitment to sustainability, the Leeuwpan open pit mine in Delmas, Mpumalanga province, is undergoing a project to extend its LOM (Life of Mine) time by a further ten years. This R522m optimisation project will enhance Leeuwpan’s performance through better alignment of access roads to the site, as well as upgrades to the existing plant.

Mafube Life Extension

Mafube coal is an existing 50/50 joint venture between Exxaro and Anglo American. This open cast mine, located East of Middleburg in the Mpumalanga province, comprises a crushing and conveyance system from Nooitgedacht mining operations to the existing Springboklaagte ROM stockpile. The Life Extension project currently underway will enhance the plant’s ability to produce and sell coal briquettes locally, using its already-constructed briquetting plant.

Matla Life of Mine

Matla mine, an underground operation, is located some 20km West of Kriel in Mpumalanga province. The Matla power station served by the mine is responsible for approximately 9% of Eskom’s baseload electricity. The 3.5bn project currently underway comprises four separate points of improvement, and will likely be the last sizeable project to be implemented on Matla until the scheduled closing of the power station, planned for 2033.
